On the 5/4/2019 the Coventry Cobras travelled to a late 22:15 face off against the Nottingham Outlaws. Playing on the huge elite league playoff pad, the Cobras game plan had been adapted to suit the huge zones and soft ice.

The first period started and it took some time for the Coventry boys to get out of first gear although defending very well and spending a lot of time in the home teams end. No goals came from either team.

The second had barley got underway as the Nottingham team grabbed themselves an early lead. The Cobras responded very well to the restart and went from first gear to third in a heartbeat. Scoring not 1, not 2 but 3 quick succession goals. (24th, 26th and 27th minute) starting our scoring off from the point was 43 Matty Phillips with a bar down shot through some great screen work. Followed up by a great breakaway pass to 81 Jak Smith saw him finish off in style with a 5 hole deke. 39 Ash Cathcart finalised the Cobras scoring in this period with another great defensive play giving us a two goal cushion. Nottingham managed to grab a last minute goal before the period was out but Cobras still lead by a goal going into the 3rd.

The period restart came and the Cobras knew they still had to put in a solid 20 minutes to see the game out. Giving us back the two goal cushion was another bar down point shot from 43 Matty Phillips. The well oiled Outlaws team kept coming back. Another goal for them halving the goal gap. Both teams had been answering to goals very well. Cobras 95 Lynas pulling off some mid air magic on the power play to take us 2 in front again. Short lived with a battling Nottingham home team once again taking our lead down to one just a minute later. With the score sitting at 5-4 Cobras the pressure was on to defend well as the Nottingham team came in desperate waves of attack to equalise with only minutes remaining. Forgetting about their defensive responsibility’s for just a split second and with only 3 seconds left on the clock the Coventry team smashed a last insurance goal in. Post and in and second of the night for 81 Jak Smith saw the away team triumph in a great well worked game of hockey in one of the best rinks in the country.

Great building, Great opposition, Great game, and a great WIN!!

Man of the match 95 Micheal Lynas
Players player 43 Matty Phillips

The return match in Coventry has been booked for 4/5/2019 at a nice early time of 16:15. Keep your eyes pealed for all the details.
